CD Trivia

The Jewel case.

Since their release in 1982, CDs - Compact Discs are usually housed in a "jewel case".  This plastic unit of 142 mm × 125 mm × 10 mm contains a 12 cm x 12 cm booklet in the front lid, the CD's center hole fits in the middle tray and there is a back card with info. like list of songs, etc.

The spine  shows the name of the artist and the album and the record company, ao as to be visible when the Jewel cases are stacked like books on a shelf.
This type of plastic case is quite expensive in the production chain, so it's sometime replaced by a carboard sleeve, like a small version of the LP sleeves.

Super Audio CD

It is CD Audio on stereoids.
To succeed the very sucessful Compact Disc, Philips and Sony introduced the Super Audio CD in 1999.
The SACD format offers more channels for surround sound, and a longer playing time than CD,and a better audio quality than the standard CD, in principle.

It features several audio tracks to give a great hall sensation if you have the equipment.
Almost all commercially released SACDs have included both stereo dual-channel and surround sound, multi-channel mixes.

Dual CD

A Dual CD is one single disc containing CD audio on one side and DVD video on the other side, like the Dual Disc  of "Jane Monheit's Season".

Both sides can be read on a DVD player of course.
This brilliant idea did not catch on unfortunately. Maybe the production of dual discs is too complex, maybe the public got confused, or both. In any case, the dual disc concept remains a test case and never reached mass production.

Mixed Discs Case

The case contains a standard CD Audio and a DVD Video. Another great idea. In this example, the package is a cardboard sleeve with very elegant artwork and classy booklet black/white photography

Example: "Emeli Sande live at the Royal Albert Hall"
On the DVD you will find a video similar to the one below:
Emeli Sande performs with Labyrinth: "Beneath Your Beautiful"

Multiple CD boxes

5 CD jewel case of the best of Sinatra

Some jewel boxes, hardly thicker than the standard versions, contain 2 CDs Audio for longer pleasure.
But there are double thickness jewel boxes which contain 5 CDs and a booklet, housed in articulated trays, as well as nice front and back covers and titles on the back and front spines

CD and Computers

Any computer can play  CDA audio through any media player, often included. There is more than that.
One advantage is that the software- like Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc. dispalys the list of tracks and when in the playlist window, click on the track you can get more info. artist, album, genre, etc.
Most MP3 players offer a very comprehensive library function, which is a database that you can search through various criteria: artist name, album, song title, year, genre, etc.

  • CDs can be duplicated easily on any computer with 2 disc drives.
  • Music files can be converted and recorded onto CD audio in any order you like, making it the ideal mixed Disc system.

Formats

  • standard CDA - CD Audio contains 600 MB of storage in the CDA format, equivalent to one hour or 20 tracks of 3 minutes.
  • CD-Rom, which stores 600 MB of data (or more) will save any kind of computer file!
  • these files could be MP3 music files. So one single CD Rom can hold up to 10 hours of music, at a normal rate of compression for the MP3
  • to record your files, there is a choice of blank discs:
record once only: recordable: CD-R ; record several times: rewritable: CD-RW
